In the NT the various words for witness are mainly related to the root marture?, “to bear witness, be a witness.” Martureo is the root word for “martyr” and it shows the ultimate form of witness in that one may be called upon to lay down his life as a witness to the truth or because of his witness for Jesus Christ.
The word witness is used 93 times in the New Testament; 42 times it is used as “testimony”, and 41 times it is used as “martyr”. God wanted us to know what He meant by a witness. Our witness is not only our proclaiming the Gospel by word, but also by our willingness to lay down everything including our bodies and our life.
Gal6.17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
