Gallup asked 1,018 American adults this question: Which of the following statements comes closest to describing your views about the Bible –

  • The Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word.
  • The Bible is the inspired word of God but not everything in it should be taken literally.
  • The Bible is an ancient book of fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by man.

Overall, 30 percent said it was the actual word of God to be taken literally, 49 percent said it was the inspired word of God, 17 percent said it was an ancient book of fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man.

The Bible is either true in every word or it is not the word of God. For if every word were not true, man would have to decide which words were true and it would be a book of man.
