Joseph and Mary offered a sacrifice as was dictated by the Law…“a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
Lk 2:22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord Lk 2:23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) Lk 2:24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
What did the Law call for?
Le 12:8 And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.”
Notice that one was for a burnt offering and one was for a sin offering.
Was this sin offering for Jesus or Mary?
“the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean”
God counted Mary a sinner as He did every human being and therefore the Law called for Mary to make a sin offering.
Jesus Christ was sinless.
2 Co 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
2 Co 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
