To the Edge of the Fire

There are five reasons, as reported by Barna Group, that 6 out of 10 Christian children walk away from Church and faith by the age of 15. I want to address each individually over the next five blogs. The question that Christians and Churches need to ask is “why did the children trade away their faith for the world”? How were they taught so poorly that they would think that they are making a good trade? What were they taught about the world and do they even know the trade that they are making? Do they understand who they are bargaining with and do they even know that they made a dangerous bargain? It is a life and death trade and the trade is real.

Today I want to start with the first reason that children say they have against the Church and faith.

  1. Churches are overprotective, demonizing the outside world (approx. 25%)

What does Jesus say about the world while praying for believers? Jesus tells each child in these next verses that if they want God’s protection they cannot walk with the world. Jesus ask that only those that walk in truth be protected.

Jn 17:9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

Jn 17:14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Jn 17:15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. Jn 17:16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Jn 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. Jn 17:18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

John and Paul tells each child to overcome not succumb. Paul even says that it is Heavenly wisdom to know that the world is a bad trade and each believer should expect to be thought of as foolish by the world, but in fact from God’s view it is the world that is foolish. If Paul has warned each believer about how the world thinks of Christians, how are Christian children surprised by what the world thinks of them? Furthermore, why are Christian children so troubled by this?

1 Jn 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

1 Co 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.

If each is saved by Heavenly wisdom, than the unsaved have worldly wisdom. What does the Bible say about wisdom of this world? God says that the “wise”, the scribe, and “debater of this age” [professors, philosophers, and atheist] are foolish by God’s standard

1 Co 1:20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

What does God say about the foolish?

Eph 5:15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, Eph 5:16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Eph 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Who are the wise and the unwise, in other words, who acts foolish…the fool [the world]?

Ps 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.

Pr 3:35 The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.

Mocking God is like a joke to the world and this is what is happening when a child chooses the world over faith.

Pr 10:23 Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

In this next verse, God tells you that the world is deceiving…the fool [the world] lies. Knowing that the whole world’s goal is to deceive, why would Christian children trust the world more than God? This verse states that everything about this world is deceiving, and the child is willingly choosing the lie. Have they been taught to know the meaning of this verse?

Pr 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.

When our Christian children choose the world, they choose to join what God calls a group of fools full of folly and without understanding. Notice that this next verse does not say that our children could suffer harm; it says that they will suffer harm.

Pr 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

In a recent study on the internet, anger was the number one emotion. You see it in social media, news articles and videos. This tells the believer that the world is full of fools. Now I did not say this, God did. This next verse tells you that anger lodges in the hearts of fools. If this world is of the evil one, it makes perfect sense that anger is the number one emotion on the internet, because the internet reflects the world.

Ec 7:9 Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

The fool [world] does not even want to understand how to save their soul.

Pr 18:2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

Proverbs 18.2 is certainly “proof of the truth” of the Bible. All the world has is a loud opinion…from philosophy to science. This is not a demonizing statement; it is the truth, and by truth this can be demonstrated. This is not an argument with the world; this is easily demonstrated by the apologetic of evil and creationism. If the world deceives, it certainly is not wrong to tell the truth.

Satan wants the youth to think that they are in opposition with their friends…no no no. The opposition is with Satan. Satan only sets the stage for the argument to be between friends. Biblical knowledge is not enough; Christian children need to be able to defend the faith as called for by Peter in 1 Peter 3.15.

1 Pe 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…

Is it not interesting that Satan has his people better trained to defend evil than we have our children trained to defend the faith and truth? Defending the faith is a command, it must be taught before a Christian child can be expected to fulfill the command. God knows that with the ability to defend the faith each child will also defend the faith in their own mind. This is the armor of God.

How are the youth to be taught and corrected?

1 Pe 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect

Love is all we have and it must be in more than word; it must be in deed.

1 Jn 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

How far should we go to save our children…to the edge of the fire?

Jud 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; Jud 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

God calls us to teach the children that the world is in the control of the evil one. Since it is Godly to teach this, why would this be a reason for walking away? We cannot just tell children that the world is evil without the Biblical teaching of why. It is truth that arms children not demonization and there are Christian organizations that prepare children for what they will face as a Christian in college. Furthermore it is not easy and it takes time, and many will need the courage to go to the edge of the fire “by snatching them out of the fire” as taught in Jude.

Is anyone crying yet?
