A young pastor had just been assigned to a new parish in Scotland and on arriving he was informed that a member, an elderly widow, lay on her death bed. He immediately set out walking to her house intending to offer comfort and prayers. Upon arriving, he was let into her room where he at once realized that she was a very serene and stately woman.
In his efforts to provide comfort and not knowing her assurance of faith, he took her hand and asked her if there was anything that she was concerned for. She stated that she was not concerned at all. Thinking that she might be somewhat reluctant to confess any fear he again asked the same question. She paused a moment, smiled and looked understandingly at the young pastor.
She said “young man I thank you for your concern but you must understand one thing on which I rest any fear. God gave me Christ; Christ gave me the Holy Spirit and God than promised that they would abide with me and in me forever. I have no fear for God is not going to go back on His promise and He cannot let Christ and the Holy Spirit go to Hell…so neither am I. Now do not get me wrong young man for I am a sinner, but Christ and the Holy Spirit are not. If they are with me than I am with them, there is no fear. If you don’t mind, would you let go of my hand for I see them coming and they both have their hand out…smiling, smiling, smiling.”
The young pastor left with his faith renewed and strengthen by the wisdom of a widow with her faith held in and her hand held out.
