The Son of God is not a New Testament teaching. The concept of a savior starts with the Old Testament. Each time God would speak to the people of Israel about their failure, He would also include that they would eventually be redeemed. Salvation of man is God’s purpose for man.
In the Old Testament He chose to use the Jewish people to reveal His plan of redemption. In the New Testament, He has chosen the Church to reveal His plan of redemption. The common theme throughout both Testaments is that it would be by a Son.
Psalm2.12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Isa9.6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Proverbs30.4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!
