The world seems to be full of spiritual people. Even unbelievers will say they are spiritual. Almost no one knows what spiritual means. There is a worldly definition and there is God’s definition.
The world’s definition: Secular spirituality emphasizes humanistic ideas on qualities such as love, compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, responsibility, harmony, and a concern for others, aspects of life and human experience which go beyond a purely materialist view of the world, without necessarily accepting belief in a supernatural reality or divine being. (Wikipedia)
God’s definition: 1 Pe 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Spirituality is a life that dies to sin every day, not a life of self-fulfillment or a life of human effort regardless of how nice a person is. This can only be accomplished through faith in Jesus Christ…and there is no other way.
Jn 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Being spiritual means having the Holy Spirit, and you cannot have the Holy Spirit without first recognizing that you are a sinner and accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and His atoning work upon the Cross that paid for those sins.
Ac 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Spirituality; what is it? It is the gift of the Holy Spirit by Jesus Christ to every person that believes in Him. This enables each of us to live a life in the Spirit; dying each day to sin. This is much different than some state of mind brought on by the self-righteous qualities of man’s own mind.
