In Ephesians 1.3-14, Paul has just finished explaining the believer’s spiritual blessings in Christ. Paul now goes on to say that he prays unceasingly for a certain thing. What is that certain thing?
Paul understands that every believer does not stand on worship, singing, service, or even prayer, without first the knowledge of Christ. Not a knowledge that rest upon knowing Christ’s name or even the knowledge of salvation, but the knowledge of Him that comes with knowing the full purpose of scripture. The knowledge that illuminates the eyes of their heart to know what their calling means. It does not mean just a believer’s own salvation, but a believer’s work in the salvation of all mankind.
Paul also speaks of a maturity in faith when he speaks of milk to meat. In some of the last words Paul wrote he again comes back to this very knowledge and how in the last days there will be a hardening of hearts to the full revealed truth of God. 2Tim4.3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. That time has come and people are not enduring sound teaching.
