Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo, North Africa said that “man is cursed with a natural disposition to pursue his own selfish desires against God’s will and his neighbor’s well-being”.
The Bible tells us that Satan was the first to sin and pride was his first sin. Pride may have been the first sin, but it was from a selfish desire to be like God. Pride of life driven by a selfish desire from the least of wants to the greatest of wants focuses our attention on ourselves.
Just imagine how completely unselfish Adam and Eve were with each other before Satan arrived. Then imagine how their personal thoughts and actions for each other would have changed once outside the Garden of Eden. They knew more clearly than any other human the devastation of the fall. The unselfish love that they once shared was never again felt between them…and they had to miss this dearly. Pure love was not all that perished; their very bodies also began to perish.
They had to long for a return to that love and that life; this is why God promised a savior. For God so loved the world.
Jn 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
