The first time that the word prayer is used in the Bible it is used in the context of healing. Abraham prays for Abimelech’s wife and slaves to be healed in order that they might again bare children. God had closed up every womb in Abimelech’s household to protect Sarah. Even though Sarah had been released, prayer was still required.
Gen20.17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.
Heal: cause or promote restoration of health or a right state after being sick, diseased, injured, or in a bad state.
Anytime we see the first use of a word in the Bible there is some significance, and the significance in this case is:
- God wants our prayers, because he directed Abraham to pray and for Abimelech to seek prayer
- God wants prayer from believers. He did not tell Abimelech to pray for himself for Abimelech was not a believer in God.
- Prayer brings healing
- The prayer for healing was answered.
