Philosophy as the “authority of truth”

The world approaches Truth as an academic discipline under the heading philosophy, giving no credence to the God of the Bible. Therefore it is important to understand what philosophy is and what philosophy is not. Below is a definition of what philosophy is and is not.

Philosophy is:

  • The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline

  • The rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct

The study of philosophy is only the investigation of Truth. Philosophy does not establish Truth.

Philosophers certainly study Truth, but philosophers do not have the “authority of truth”. The study of truth and the theory of truth are quite different from the Truth. Theories are such that they operate under the assumption that a theory is only the best answer from the information that is now available. In fact, today’s theories will invalidate yesterday’s claims to make way for tomorrow’s new theory.

What philosophy is not:

  • Philosophy is not a quest for the meaning of life.

  • Philosophy is not the search for the paranormal.

  • Philosophy and Religion is not the same thing.

  • Philosophy is not one of the Social Sciences.

Philosophy is a “pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and/or understanding" and not knowledge, wisdom, and/or understanding itself. Basically philosophy is somebody's opinion (usually called “school of thought”).

Philosophy is the “pursuit” of the understanding of Truth; philosophy does not define Truth and therefore it is not the “authority of truth” for life.

Christianity gave the “authority of truth” to philosophers and the Christian faith has never been the same. Philosophy is the mind of man trying to figure out the mind of God with the mind of man. The Bible is the mind of God teaching the mind of man with the mind of God. Philosophy without the understanding of God creates confusion.

At no time since Socrates and Plato has philosophy enjoyed such stature as it does today…even within Christianity. The Bible even warned Christianity against philosophy.

Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Philosophy is described in the Bible as empty deceit, by humans that are moved by the elementary spirits of the world…the satanic system made up of Satan, and the fallen angels along with all those that stand against Christ.

There are no new Truths for philosophy to discover; there is only a better understanding of the Truth that God established. Philosophy is the academic pursuit of this better understanding generally in a non-religious context. Christians understand that God established all absolute and exclusive Truth in the beginning. The Bible tells you that wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are only of God. One cannot know Truth without God. Yes, you can know certain truths, but not Truth that is of God without the understanding received in spiritual wisdom from the Holy Spirit.

Pr 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding…

Pr 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

1 Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”
