Memorizing Scripture

What does the Bible say about memorizing scripture?

Ps 119:11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Ps 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.

Ps 40:8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

Jesus quoted scripture many times and one important time was when He was confronted by Satan in the wilderness. Satan misquoted scripture and Jesus corrected Satan by correctly quoting scripture from memory.

Satan said; Jesus said:

Mt 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Mt 4:2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Mt 4:3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” Mt 4:4 But he (Jesus) answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Mt 4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple Mt 4:6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Mt 4:7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Mt 4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Mt 4:9 And he (Satan) said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Mt 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Mt 4:11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Three times Jesus said it is written. Jesus used the word of God and Jesus used it from memory.

Notice that the angels only came to administer to Jesus after the Devil had left. The same is true for each of us today.

It is the job of the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the scripture that you need, but the Holy Spirit cannot bring to your mind what you have not learned.

Jn 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

The Bible does teach memorizing scripture.
