My son often asks me about his future, and the Bible tells me how to answer his question. As a father, I direct him in ways that will prepare him to be able to achieve his dreams. But, I always add that God has and will continue to order his steps. In fact in Jeremiah, the Bible tells us that we are not capable of ordering our future;
Jer10.23 I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
God does want us to do our best and to plan, for the Bible also instructs us to plan, but God chooses our eventual steps.
Pro21.29 A wicked man puts on a bold face, but the upright gives thought to his ways.
Pro4.26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.
We need to acknowledge God and He will help us choose the right path.
Pro3.6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
It is the Lord that establishes my son’s steps and even when he falls, God will hold his hand…in fact the Bible says that God takes him by his right hand.
Psalms37.23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; 24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
More importantly, what is God’s plan for us all? It is God’s plan to save us through His son Jesus by His blood on the cross so that He can reconcile all things in Heaven and on Earth.
Eph1.7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
