The problem with liberal theology in a nutshell is that the liberal places the emphasis on the revelation that there are poor people; while God places the emphasis on the revelation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus emphasizes this in; Mt 26:11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
Serving is our daily sacrifice, but serving does not replace obedience: Mt 9:13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Taking the Gospel to the lost is God’s desire. To do so is to tell of the work of Christ upon the cross. Grace and mercy are results of recognizing Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior. Recognizing Christ is more important than recognizing the poor.
Serving the poor is within one’s own will and this is why the liberal theologian likes to place the emphasis upon service before Christ and the cross. Accepting Christ is surrendering that will and surrender is inhibited by pride…especially pride of service. When truth is not defined strictly by the Bible, truth suffers and it can be seen in the social gospel of liberals…one in which service and sacrifice replaces surrender.
