“Hope always remains a lousy hedge against a lack of trust.” (Larry Doyle)
This is a business quote by a business writer, but it is also a wonderful quote about faith. I recently talked to several people worried about dying. They knew that I was a Christian and remarked that “it was understandable that I was not worried” since I knew where I was going. I find this a remarkably ironic statement. They could know the same and have the same assurance, yet they willing choose not to and remain afraid.
It is not that people do not know God; it is that they willing reject God The Christian definition of Christian faith is:
Heb11.1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Yes hope is a part of faith, but a hope that comes of conviction.
The Bible tells us God is faithful.
Heb10.23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
Hope without trust is certainly a lousy hedge against all harm. Trust with faith is not a hedge it is peace forever.
Rom15.13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
