The fact that the Earth was formed especially to support life is confirmed in Isaiah where we read: ‘For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the Earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited …’ (Isaiah 45:18).

There are three other aspects of the biblical creation account which show that the Earth is of particular importance in the Universe. Firstly, the Earth was the first object to be made in the Universe. This order is quite striking because the Earth existed without the Sun for the first three days of creation. Secondly, the Earth received a relatively large amount of time for its creation. The Earth was given three days for its creation, compared to only one day for the rest of the entire Universe. [ii]

Thirdly, the Sun, Moon and stars are all said to have the purpose of giving light on the Earth. The fact that the stars were made for the benefit of mankind is also stated in Deuteronomy 4:19 where it is written: ‘the Sun, the moon, and the stars … God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage.’[iii]
