We know that there are times when instructing and discipling our children, they will become upset with us. But the Bible does tell us in the same verse to bring our children up in discipline. Eph6.4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. How do we harmonize these two commands?
God wants us to discipline our children just as the Bible speaks of God disciplining all of us as an earthly father would. The warning not to provoke is specific in that we are not to discipline in anger…furthermore some anger is a sin, one that we all struggle with.
God knew that our children would not always agree with our discipline so He gave some very precious promises to our children for obedience. Eph6.2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), and this is the promise. Prov4.10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. In this section in Proverbs, God is speaking of seeking and getting wisdom, and the promise for this is a long life. There are also other verses that describe this life as a successful one if lived in wisdom.
