Seven Things About the Fear of the Lord
The phrase “the fear of the Lord” is a puzzling thing to many believers and unbelievers. Many understand why the unbeliever should be in fear of the Lord, but few believers understand why the Christian should be in fear. Some Bible teachers try to soften the phrase by interpreting it as “in awe of the Lord”, and this phrase can be correctly interpreted in this way, but it has an even richer meaning. Let me show seven things about “the fear of the Lord” and you will have the answer.
The Bible tells you seven times “the fear of the Lord” “is”. The “is” should be used as an equal sign. “The fear of the Lord” “is” seven things.
“The Fear of the Lord is”
- The whole duty of man:
Ec 12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
- Enduring, true, and righteous forever:
Ps 19:9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
- Beginning of wisdom:
Ps 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
- Beginning of knowledge:
Pr 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- To hate evil as God hates evil…agree with God:
Pr 8:13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
- The fountain of life:
Pr 14:27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.
- Riches and honor and life:
Pr 22:4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
