An Outside View of Inside Knowledge

Here is a quote from a former atheist J. Budziszewski,

“Of course, inside knowledge is not always superior to outside knowledge. Sometimes it is even inferior to it. A drug addict does not understand his addiction better than his doctor does, for he is in the grip of it.”[1]

This is true of an atheist, it is not that he is basing his decision on any facts; for an atheist cuts himself off from the means of understanding…an atheist does not even read the Bible. The atheist thinks that he knows the Bible just as an addict thinks that he knows his addiction, but his knowledge consists of myths and a poor understanding of the real facts. Myth and a poor understanding of the Bible has always been a part of atheism. Just like the drug addict, so sure that he is right that he will die for his addiction. When a reformed addict looks back on his recovery and realizes that the addiction that he almost died for was really no life at all; he also realizes that he was spiritually empty as well.

J. Budziszewski goes on to say something very profound for everyone that thinks they are rejecting God on logic and facts,

This blindness has become visible to me only in retrospect. I am not an atheist simply but a repented atheist. It is not from the experience of having been an atheist that I claim to understand something of atheism but from the experience of ceasing to be one. I have acquired an outside view of my inside knowledge.”[2]

None of this is new to God; it was all foretold in the Bible.

1Cor2.14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

According to God, the natural person (unbeliever) thinks the Bible is folly. He cannot even understand the Bible because the Bible must be spiritually understood. To understand the Bible we must first “seek God”.

Acts17.27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of usJames4.8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…

An atheist is not an atheist because he has superior inside knowledge; he is an atheist because he has cut himself off from an outside view of his inside knowledge.
