My son often asks me about his future, and the Bible tells me how to answer his question. As a father, I direct him in ways that will prepare him to be able to achieve his dreams. But, I always add that God will continue to order his steps. In fact, in Jeremiah, the Bible tells us that we are not capable of ordering our future;
Jer10.23 I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
God does want us to plan, because the Bible instructs us to plan, but God chooses our steps.
Pro21.29 A wicked man puts on a bold face, but the upright gives thought to his ways.
Pro4.26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.
We need to acknowledge God and He will help us choose the right path.
Pro3.6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
It is the Lord that establishes my son’s steps and even when he falls, God will hold his hand…in fact the Bible says that God takes him by his right hand.
Psalms37.23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; 24though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
