From Genesis forward, the everyday dealings of financial and personal life required guarantees just as it does today. During the life and times of Jesus, people would have understood the Apostle Paul when he stated that the Holy Spirit was a guarantee of our salvation.
2Cor1.21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
2Cor5.5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
Eph1.13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
It reminds me of this story. A young pastor at a new Church in Scotland went to visit an elderly and dying member of the congregation. He asked her if she had any worries that she needed to sort out before meeting the Lord. She replied that she did not. Wanting to be sure that she understood, he asked her the same question again.
She replied, “young man you must understand that the Lord gave me the Holy Spirit to dwell in me as a guarantee of my salvation. Now I do deserve to go to Hell, but if I went the Spirit would have to go with me and the Lord is not going to let the Holy Spirit go to Hell. That makes me safe; safe in the Lord and I think I see Him coming now.”
She closed her eyes to see Heaven, and the young pastor closed his eyes to see the Glory of Heaven in his heart.
