A Godly Home

There are people that have been convicted of murder that are Christians. There are those that hate God and are not Christians. To murder and to hate God are two sins that would normally be thought of by Christians as equal and very terrible sins. In the Book of Romans, the list of sins that Paul wrote would come as quite a surprise to many Christians, but there is one on the list that looks like it ought not be there. “Disobedient to parents” on a list equal to murder and hating God would surprise most.

Romans1.29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Paul even repeated “disobedient to their parents” in describing Godlessness in the last days.

2Tim3.1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Paul knew the importance to a Godly and peaceful home…one with a balance of respect from and to each other.

Eph6.1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

In verses right before the instructions for fathers and children, there was the foundational instruction for husband and wife.

Eph5.33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

A Godly home flows from loving Godly parents and pours into obedient children. Is it easy…not in a fallen world, but it is doable and Paul told how it is to be accomplished “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord”; along with “love and respect between parents.
